MOSAIC
Develop a prototypical European AI-enhanced platform, serving as a central, scalable hub for broadcasters and news creators
Project Summary
The MOSAIC project was an ambitious, EU-funded initiative (under the Grant Agreement No – LC – 03303874) that transformed the European media landscape by harnessing the power of AI-driven technologies. Led by Fincons Group, this 18-month project created a centralized, multilingual, and multimodal AI-based hub to enhance the creation, distribution, and accessibility of media content across Europe.
MOSAIC, which stands for Multilingual Multimodal Centralised AI-based Hub for the European Media Content Market, addressed a crucial challenge in Europe’s media sector: the underutilization and fragmentation of valuable content across linguistic and cultural borders. By integrating state-of-the-art tools such as AI-based translation, automatic subtitling, and content adaptation, MOSAIC enabled broadcasters, media producers, and independent creators to seamlessly repurpose content for diverse audiences, making European media more inclusive, accessible, and competitive.
The project focused on using AI technologies to enable seamless multilingual translations, providing high-quality subtitles, and adapting content to meet cultural and regional preferences. This innovative approach helped preserve and showcase Europe’s rich cultural heritage, from historical archives to contemporary media, ensuring that Europe remains at the forefront of the global digital media landscape.
Fincons Group, as the project coordinator, led this initiative in collaboration with a consortium of eleven prominent partners. Through this collaboration, the project tested and validated the MOSAIC platform with real-world applications, ensuring it met the needs of the media industry while upholding European values of privacy, ethical AI usage, and linguistic diversity.
The MOSAIC project not only empowered media professionals with cutting-edge tools but also engaged European citizens by providing new ways to interact with Europe’s vast media archives, ensuring that the continent’s rich media resources are accessible to all. The project served as a key step in boosting the competitiveness of European media organizations in an increasingly globalized and digital-first world.
INFALIA’s Contribution to MOSAIC
Infalia designed the intelligent core of the MOSAIC platform, transforming isolated archives into a unified, searchable, and verifiable European market. Our contribution shifted the focus from passive storage to active video understanding and secure federation.
Key Technical Achievements:
- Intelligent Gateway & Cross-Lingual Search: We developed a Federated “Index-Once, Search-Anywhere” architecture that allows journalists to search across diverse European archives in over 8 languages, breaking down linguistic silos while ensuring strict data sovereignty.
- Narrative Video Understanding: Moving beyond standard object detection, we integrated models like LLaVA-OneVision to analyze the temporal context of footage. This allows the system to identify complex actions and stories rather than just isolated objects.
- Deepfake Defense & Verification: To combat misinformation, we deployed an AI ensemble that flags deepfakes and manipulated content by analyzing subtle spatial and temporal inconsistencies, providing a robust layer of authenticity for newsrooms.
- Scalable Infrastructure & Management: We delivered an enterprise-grade layer that separates heavy media files from metadata. This ensures high performance across millions of assets while providing secure, role-based workspaces for collaboration.
- Automated Annotation & Visual Discovery: Our suite of AI modules provides person recognition, short captioning, and content-type identification (e.g., flagging disturbing content). It also enables advanced visual retrieval to quickly find similar or duplicate media across the entire network.
Through MOSAIC, Infalia validated its vision for high-scale media orchestration, proving that its architecture can handle the rigorous, burst-heavy demands of real-world news production without compromising performance or user experience.
